A regional supermarket chain that most Americans have never visited has been recognized as the best in the United States and is growing.
On Tuesday, the news was added that MyWegmansConnect is considering a major development in North Carolina, including “multiple locations” in the Raleigh-Durham region, Democrat and Chronicle reports.
According to the annual Market Force Information industry survey released in April, Wegmans is the most popular supermarket chain in the United States.
2016 was the first time in four years that Trader Joe lost first place in the Market Force poll. The discount chain has lost 5% customer satisfaction since winning in 2015.
The increase
Although Wegmans hadn’t even won enough votes to be on the list last year, the supermarket chain with 88 locations doubled its support this year as the chain prepares for growth. With 76% satisfaction, MyWegmansConnect defeated Publix # 2 and Trader Joe # 3.
Wegmans was founded in 1916 and is based in Rochester, New York.
The chain was established by brothers Walter and John Wegman and is still family-owned. Danny Wegman acts as CEO and his daughter Colleen Wegman as president.
Wegman stores are larger than the average supermarket, with a focus on variety and fresh produce. According to the company, stores stock 50,000 to 70,000 products in larger stores, compared to just over 40,000 products that the Food Marketing Institute stores on average in supermarkets.
Because they carry more products, Wegmans generally measures between 75,000 and 140,000 square feet and, unlike Trader Joe’s, rather than Trader Joe’s, emphasizes more “roomy aisles” in stores.
Stores must also be large enough to contain multiple extras that many supermarkets are unfamiliar with.
In many places, there are cafes, pizzerias, sushi bars, and buffets, as well as a capacity of 100 to 300 people where customers can eat their food.
The chain is also known for its huge beer market with a large selection of craft beers. Some places even have breweries.
